BANKING AND FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS AFTER BECOMING A NEW CITIZEN
After acquiring Turkish citizenship, some banks may continue to classify you as a foreign customer because your former Foreign Identification Number (YKN) remains registered in their systems. Unless this information is updated, you may later experience problems with money transfers, account access, loan transactions and similar banking services.
For this reason, the action required at the bank is not merely “showing your identity card”; it is a systematic update of the customer record.
1. Visiting the Bank in Person to Update the Customer Record
Take the following documents with you:
- New Turkish Republic identity card
- Former Foreign Identification Number
- Passport (required by some banks)
- Proof of address (required by some banks)
Specifically request the following from the bank:
“I would like my customer type to be updated from foreign national to citizen of the Republic of Türkiye.”
This wording is important. Some branches merely take a photocopy of the identity card without changing the customer status in the system. The procedure may also be carried out together with a lawyer where desired.
The technical procedure performed by the bank is:
Existing customer number + YKN → matched with the Turkish Republic identity number
3. Will the IBAN and Accounts Change?
No:
- The IBAN remains the same.
- The account number does not change.
- No payment or other loss occurs.
Only the identity information linked to the customer profile is updated in the background. Some banks may create a new customer profile; therefore, expressly instruct the bank not to close the existing accounts.
